A Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is a type of Geosynthetic Material used primarily in environmental containment applications, such as lining landfills, ponds, and other structures to prevent the migration of liquids. It consists of a layer of bentonite clay sandwiched between two layers of geotextiles (woven or non-woven fabrics) or bonded to a Geomembrane. The Bentonite clay is the key component because it has a high swelling capacity and low permeability when hydrated, making it an effective barrier to liquid and gas flow.

Key Components:
1. Bentonite Clay: This Natural clay material swells significantly when exposed to water, creating a dense, low-permeability barrier.
2. Geotextiles: These are fabric layers that provide structural support to the clay. They also protect the clay layer from punctures and other mechanical damage.

How GCLs Work:
When a GCL is installed and comes into contact with moisture, the bentonite clay layer hydrates and swells, filling the voids within the composite structure. This creates a hydraulic barrier that effectively prevents the passage of liquids, such as water or leachate from a landfill, ensuring environmental protection.

Applications:
- Landfill Liners and Caps: Used to prevent contamination of groundwater by containing leachate.
- Canal Linings: To prevent water loss in irrigation canals.
- Pond Liners: Used in ponds, lagoons, and other water containment structures.
- Environmental Protection:Employed in mining operations and other industrial sites to prevent contamination of surrounding environments.

GCLs are favored in many projects because they are easier and faster to install compared to traditional compacted clay liners and often require less space for installation.
